Alright I want to get a consensus of what fellow dog owners like me think about dog food. I have heard many say they dislike any store brand dog food like you would see in Walmart. I was curious Purina One is it good or bad in your opinion and why? or why not? Thank you all in advance–peace Jade

It’s not the crap of the crap but it’s a low quality food. Anything you can find in a grocery store will be poor quality. I have never ever seen one of the high quality brands in a grocery store.

The reason it is low quality is because it is full of corn, by-products, and filler grains. All things you do not want to see in your pet food.

Dog foods to avoid: Purina, Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet, Royal Canin, and anything else you can find in a grocery store.

Foods to look for: Innova, Wellness, Solid Gold, Canidae, Blue Wilderness (put out by Blue Buffalo).

i would think it would be ok…there is a lot of dogs out there who eat it and are fine. I feed my dog Iams and that is bought at wal-mart. your dog will let you know if he/she does not like the food or the way it makes them feel. just keep your eyes open for any changes in how they are acting.

I would have to say that we have been quite happy with Purina One products. I have 9 dogs (used to have 15) and we have always tried to feed premium foods. I did not think of Purina One as a premium brand until….

I attended a seminar and saw the research that Purina does. That does not mean that I buy it on a regular basis, but I feel confident when I do. My dogs do not suddenly get stomach issues nor do they get dandruff, etc.

We often fed Purina One to the dogs in our kennel too and again, we had no problems.

No, it’s best with go with something like Orijen or another super premium food. There is a lot of "filler’ ingredients which don’t give your dog any nutrition.

It isn’t a bad food. I used to feed it to my dogs and they did fine, and my cats still eat it,and they are all very healthy with glossy coats and bright eyes.If you cannot afford to feed Wellness or Orijen or whatever, then feed what you can afford,as long as your dog does well on it.

There are a lot of "Super Quality" dog and cat foods out there. They come with a "Super Quality" name and price….but do we really know whats going on in the factory? Yeah, the ingredients may be a bit better but what about everything else? Fact is it all comes from the same place. Pet owners who want to be more conscious are responsible. You can do that by just reading and comparing nutritional labels.

Purina one is actually not a bad food at all. Will it make your dog live longer? I dunno. My mother ‘inherited’ my grandmothers cocker spaniel when she died. This dog has been eating moist and meaty mixed with Alpo all of her life. (Not a great diet if you ask me…but it is all she will eat.) She is now 15 if you can believe that! Generally speaking smaller dogs live longer, but geez. Sometimes I joke and say ‘Is she gonna live another 5 years?’ 😉 So did ‘crappy’ Alpo make a difference? I don’t think it effected her life span at all!

OK…I believe in reading labels and not passing on baloney information. Purina one is not a bad food. It is even comparable to Iams and Science Diet. Feel free to do your own research, but here is a page that compares ingredients and nutritional information. You DO NOT have to go to your vet or a fancy pet store to get good food for your dog.
